Indigenous Knowledge and the African Way Forward: Challenges and Opportunities

Beyuo Alfred Naamwintome, David Millar
Indigenous knowledge exists and particularly in Africa and is being challenged as science and this negatively influences the harnessing of it globally. The study focused on the history of knowledge as science and the evolutionary analysis of science as a body of knowledge, within a Grounded Theory approach. The findings revealed that indigenous knowledge is a body of knowledge like the western science and has survived the custodians of this body of knowledge for generations; it dictates the prog...

Developing Reading Culture for the Challenges of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

C. Olujide Ajidahun
The paper critically interrogates and assesses the importance of reading and its indispensable contributions to the educational development of the society. The paper also laments the fallen standard of education in Nigeria and addresses the decay and the rot that have characterised the educational system in Nigeria, which are a consequence of the dwindling reading culture among the Nigerian youths. An analysis of the recent Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination results conducted by bot...

Faith-Based Organizations-State Relation and the Democratization Process in Kenya

Solomon Owuoche
This article examines how Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs)-state relation influences the democratization process in Kenya. Ideally, the state should be in the forefront in nurturing the democratization process. However, evidence suggests that the Kenyan state has for a long time appeared as an unwilling participant in the democratization process. Instead, the Kenyan state has refused to let go of the old system of governance associated with restricted political freedoms, ethnic discrimination, h...

Preparation and Characterization of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized via Chemical Precipitation Method

Ismat Zerin Luna, Lutfun Naher Hilary, A. M. Sarwaruddin Chowdhury, M. A. Gafur, Nuruzzaman Khan, Ruhul A. Khan
Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) were synthesized via chemical precipitation method using copper (II) chloride dihydrate and sodium hydroxide. Then nanoparticles were characterized by using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy. The XRD patterns and EDX spectra showed that the prepared CuO-NPs were highly pure, crystalline and nano-sized. The SEM image suggested that nano particles were ...

Prevalence of Human Intestinal Helminth Parasites among Undergraduate Students at the off Campus (North Gate Area), Federal University of Technology, Akure (Futa), Nigeria

Ebenezer Oluyemi Dada, Christiana Eleojo Aruwa
Studies have shown that soil-transmitted helminth infections are widely distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics. Poor sanitation is a major factor in the spread of intestinal helminth parasites. Hence, a study was carried out from July to September 2014, to determine the prevalence of intestinal helminth parasites among undergraduate students at North Gate, FUTA. A total of two hundred (200) stool samples were collected randomly from both males and females. Faecal samples were analyzed...

Dielectric Properties of Human Normal and Malignant Liver Tissue: A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics Approach

Francesco Farsaci, Annamaria Russo, Silvana Ficarra, Ester Tellone
In this paper we will show the possibility of studying physical properties and irreversible phenomena that occur in biological tissues by applying the dielectric Kluitenberg’s non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory. Namely, we shall use some recent extensions of this theory that allows deducing its main characteristic parameters from experimental measurements. We determine frequency spectrum for phenomenological and state coefficients of the non-equilibrium thermodynamic approach. Applying these r...

Syndemic Theory and Male Same Sex Intimate Partner Violence: An Urban/Non-Urban Comparison

Matt L. Pimentel, An-Lin Cheng, Patricia J. Kelly
Background: The majority of research with gay men has been conducted in urban populations, with minimal work on partner violence in non-urban (suburban and rural) settings. Syndemic theory, the concept that negative health outcomes are increased with the addition of each new deleterious health variable, has been used to understand partner violence. The aim of the study was to determine differences in prevalence and associated factors of male same-sex intimate partner violence (MSSIPV) among gay ...

Perception of Risks and Benefits of Smoking among Adolescents of Glacier International College

Bibha Dhungel, Neema Bhandari
Background: Tobacco use is one of the important preventable causes of death and a leading public health problem all over the world. Multiple factors are involved in the initiation of smoking in adolescents and young adults. Adolescents may incorrectly believe that cigarette smoking is less risky than other behaviors, such as alcohol consumption and drug use, and they do not understand the short-term effect and addictive nature of smoking. Objectives: The main objective of the study was to find o...

Comparison of an In-House Quantitative Real-Time PCR and COBAS AmpliPrep/TaqMan Roche for Determination of Viral Load for HIV Type 1 Non-B

Erick Ntambwe Kamangu, Adawaye Chatte, Raphael Boreux, Fabrice Susin, Richard Lunganza Kalala, Georges Lelo Mvumbi, Patrick De Mol, Marie-Pierre Hayette, Dolores Vaira
Context: The in-house techniques or experimental methods are increasingly recommended for their low-cost reagents for the determination of the Viral Load (VL) in resource-limited settings. The objective of this study was to compare the determination of VL from HIV-1 non-B samples by an in-house technique with the COBAS AmpliPrep/TaqMan version 2.0. Method: In this cross-sectional study, 39 plasma samples from patients infected with HIV type 1 non-B from N’Djamena and Kinshasa were used to determ...

Social-Ecological Evolutionary Resilience: A Proposal to Enhance “Sustainability Transformation” about Theoretical Foundation

Qiyan Wang, Masakazu Yamashita
In this conceptual paper, we try to take a step to explore theoretical foundation of sustainability transformation in dimension of resilience thinking. Firstly, this paper will reexamine the ontology of ecosystem resilience so as to avoid the conflated view between ecosystem resilience and engineering resilience; secondly, it will propose social-ecological evolutionary resilience as theoretical and conceptual foundation for sustainability transformation.
