Agriculture, Climate Change and Food Security

Nehemia Kiprutto, Laban K. Rotich, Geoffrey K. Riungu
Agriculture is one of the main economic activities in the world, with its significance magnified especially among the world’s poor. This paper seeks to explore how climate change would impact on the agricultural sector and consequently food security. Agricultural activities in most developing countries entirely depend on rainfall patterns, on the contrary, climate change has emerging as an environmental challenge with adverse impacts expected on food security. This is mainly through incidences o...

Potential Food Safety Concerns in Fried Potato Products in Kenya

George O. Abong, Jackson N. Kabira
Fried potato products, mainly French fries and potato crisps, are consumed across all age groups and socio-economic status. These products are sources of energy and provide between-the-meal snacks for many consumers all over the world, Kenya included. There exist different food preparation set-ups that process these products under different conditions while using a variety of additives. A number of safety issues have, however, risen in the past that can be linked to glycoalkaloids in raw potatoe...

Dark Energy Stars and the Cosmic Microwave Background

George F. Chapline
Cosmological models with a large cosmological constant are unstable due to quantum critical fluctuations at the de Sitter horizon. Due to this instability the space-time in these models will quickly evolve into a Friedmann-like expanding universe containing dark energy stars and radiation. In this paper it is pointed out that this provides a simple explanation for both the observed radiation entropy per gram of dark matter and the level of temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave backgro...

Synthesis and Characterization of Chromium Doped Zinc Sulfide Nanoparticles

Milind Bodke, Hari Khawal, Umesh Gawai, Babasaheb Dole
Nanoparticles of pure and Zn1-xCrxS with concentrations (x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.08 and 0.10) were prepared successfully by co-precipitation technique. Crystallographic study was intervened by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. There were no extra peaks observed in the XRD pattern. From XRD peaks it is confirmed that the samples prepared were highly pure and cubic in structure. The particle size calculated from XRD data was around 3 nm. It confirms that the qua...

Microbiological Assessment of Fast Foods Sold in Lokoja Metropolis, Nigeria

Patience Temitope Fowoyo, Ridwan Baba Ali
Four food samples namely fried chicken, fried rice, meat pie and cake from four different fast food restaurants in Lokoja were purchased and assessed microbiologically. Ten bacterial species were identified as Streptococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus sp., Flavobacterium sp., Proteus sp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Salmonella sp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Four fungal species namely Penicillium sp., Rhizo...

Recent Research Progress on Study of Paragonimus westermani in China

Dingli Xu, Jing Li, Qi Liao, Tuergong Jiang, Jiang Cai, Yuelong Lv, Jiakuan Lv, Baile Shen, Zexian Xu, Yanting Zhang, Jianfa Liu
Recently, along with the development of biochemical and molecular immunological techniques, the diagnosis methods have been improved in which preparing natural parasite antigens, and genetically engineered recombinant antigens have been applied by using agglutination test, complement fixation methods to detect the human’s serum antibodies for parasite identification of paragonimus infections. To improve the detection rate, some scholars have used phage peptide library technology to further impro...

A Novel Approach to Unravel Gait Dynamics Using Symbolic Analysis

Chandrakar Kamath
Hypothesizing that a mere binary partition in symbolic analysis may not be sufficient to capture the dynamics in gait signals, we attempted to find how far the symbolic analysis with six partitions helps to characterize the nonlinear properties of gait signals and thereby discriminate between healthy control and neurodegenerative disordered gait signals. Differences found in the symbolic entropies of the healthy control and neurodegenerative disorder groups facilitated classification between the...
